The Anatomy of a Habit: How Habits Form
To understand how to break a habit, it’s important to first understand how habits form. Charles Duhigg, in his book The Power of Habit, descirbes the formation of a habit as a three-step loop:
Cue: The trigger that intiates the habit. It could be anything form a specific time of day a particular emotional state, or an environmental cue like seeing a certain object.
Routine: The behavior itself. This is the action you take when the cure occurs, such as reaching for a snack when you feel bored or checking your phone when you hear a notification.
Reward: The benefit you gain from the behavior. This could be sense of satisfication, pleasure, or relief from stress.
